Perfon, Malta and elsewhere, before the introduction of the Act, the dreadful injuries inflicted by syphilitic diseases on soldiers, whereby many disabled for life and had to be discharged from the service, I earnestly hope that the compulsory examination of women under the Act will be continued in force in this Colony.
I believe it is a well-established fact that where the Act prevails, venereal and syphilitic diseases are not only less frequent but also of a milder type than was the case before its introduction, and I attribute this entirely to the working of that portion of the Act which brings the women affected under medical treatment and thus prevents the diseases from assuming the most acute and virulent forms.
I beg to forward herewith the report of Deputy Surgeon General Thomson, the Principal Medical Officer, on this subject.
I have, &c.
& Mr. Sargent,
Major-General Commanding
China & Straits Settlements.
